My Little Pony Drawings

I great way to learn to draw a style is to copy the process of one that already exists. With practice you can learn the lines and curves that make that style unique. I know I know, there are people who argue this is just stealing people's style, but this is how the artists of the victorians times learned the the basics to their craft

So I wanted to learn how to draw the new My Little Ponies Friendship is Magic series.

Here's a few runs of me learning how to draw the style. I paused clips and copied what I saw, observing mostly on the eyes and back legs.

Here's the first piece of my trying on my own from scratch. Of course it's Ava and myself. I like our little crafting icons on our butts.

Kokeshi Drawings

Kokeshi are a wooden Japanese dolls .  They use to look a thinner and taller, but these are the more common versions now a days.

I wanted to do some drawings, becuase I thought they were quite cute

Here I was trying some different techniques with shading, and I ended up really liking the Flat Paper Doll look

So I continued to experiment with different characters

Euphemia from Code Geass
I tried playing with the outlining, and got some textures for the background to make it not complety boring

Voicaloid Rin and Len
Trying the paper shadowing again, and making my own texture, because I didn't feel like using other's people work for the textures all the time.  But to be honest, I think the background is rather ugly.

Inner Scouts from Sailor Moon

My favorite of the series.  Even though in the cartoon they mostly look like the same character with different colours and hair styles, following the manga instead gave me more variety to make the characters more unique.  At this point I like the simplicity of the background, doesn't distract from the characters.

Harley Quinn from Batman
Because not everyone is an anime fan, I did one of my favorite comic book characters.  I didn't know what I wanted to do for the background and was just going at random shapes.  Than using the colours of "Mr J" aka the Joker.  I ended up loving this combination, it really enhances Harley's connection with the Joker

Crafters In Disguise - SmallRiniLady and Ava
It's US, aint we cute

Mistborn Sketch

I drew this sketch in my hotel room across the street from the San Diego Comic-Con.  I received an autographed copy of the book from Brandon Sanderson at the TOR booth!

I ran into Brandon Sanderson in the hall and got a picture with him! I am wearing my mistcloak. I found him to be a really nice guy, and I love his books! He even signed a couple of Wheel of Time book plates for me which I put in the two Wheel of Time books he co-wrote.

Here is the original pencil sketch before I went over it with a brush pen. I am still experimenting with brush pen techniques.

Waking the Dragon

I've been practicing my tablet drawing!
"LFG"

To create this picture I sketched it in pencil on paper first. Then I scanned it into my netbook, hooked up my Wacom tablet, downloaded GIMP and started inking over my pencil sketch. Note: You have to change the pen sensitivity from "opacity" to "size" in the GIMP drawing pen settings.

Cosplay Week Sakura 2011 #5 - Hina likes to Draw

Another STORY

So for those who have seen me cosplay before will notice I like to cosplay from RozenMaiden, and often known as the "girl with the box".  Basically I'm a victorian doll and I sleep in my doll case.  Through the years I have made several Rozen Maiden outfits (different characters from the anime).

This year was time for me to do Hinaichigo.  I dont really like her character because she's that annoying toddler who acts like a total brat.  Oddly this was one of the funnest to do.  Besides sitting in in the brief case like I had done in many years prior.

I put on cat ears and paws.  I'm not a Neko, but Hina is cosplaying a Neko (emphasis on that the doll is cosplaying but making the paws obviously gloves).  This is because there is a popular episode in which she dresses up as a Neko.

Also Hina, being a toddler likes to draw, although she doesn't well.  So I grabbed a box of crayons and drew pictures for people.  I made sure to make the pictures as childlike as possible.  Here I met a Shinku, so I drew a picture for her while she drank her tea.

Here's another picture I drew for some photographers.

Character Sketches

Artists can only get better by practicing. One method to practice is to do at least one new sketch every day. Try out different styles, look at the work from your favorite artists and explore their techniques and incorporate them into your art as you try to discover your own style.

Here are some sketches I drew with the intention of inking and coloring them in Photoshop later.

This is a sketch I did of my husband's Night Elf Druid character in World of Warcraft. She is a healer and has full PVP (player-versus player) gear on with a book in one hand and a wicked-looking dagger in the other.

His account was inactive when I made this sketch so I used a picture from the Armory as reference for the details in the armor.

Originally this character was a Tauren male named Buttersprime...

This is an Elf Rogue of my own design, not a character from a game or book. Apparently she is a left-handed backstabber. This is another sketch I did with the intention of digitally inking and coloring it.

Here is a sketch I definitely intended to ink in Photoshop so I didn't try to make it detailed or fix lines; I am still not sure how I want to detail the clothing, and I would like to experiment with a more fierce expression.

She is based on Vin from the Mistborn Trilogy books by Brandon Sanderson.

2010 Aki Con - Cosplay Report

This year I attended AkiCon in early November.  It's a Anime Convention in Bellevue WA.  It's still a bit of a baby so a little small, but still filled with cosplayers and anime fans.

Here we've got the AkiCon Mascots

Here we've got Taichi and Yamato from the first Digimon series.  Don't forget their Agumon Digimon with them.

Big person Kiki cosplayer with little person Kiki Cosplayer, the little girl was trying to run away from the stranger

There were some wonderful non japanese cosplays this year.  Here we've got Phoneix (Jean Grey) from XMen, and Lilo and Stitch.  There were also a great original Alice in Wonderland and original Harley Quinn from Batman

What was cool about AkiCon that I've never seen at any other cons yet was they had a dedicated Cosplay Hall room which was a bunch of sets in which people could go take pictures in a awesome background.  Here I'm in a Japanese garden, there was also a Casio, Winter Wonderland, and an Alley with grafitti.

Ramen Eating Context.  The trophy was pretty sweet.  It's topped with a bowl of Ramen with Chopsticks, and sits the king of Ramen eating -> Narato

So Aki-Con staff was going around telling us to go get pictures with Johnny Yong Bosh (The GREEN POWER RANGER from the second series).  But I was so confused becuase this guy looks WAY too old to be him.  So when I got home I looked up the guest.  This is actually Robert Axelrod who played Lord Zedd and Finster, two main bad guys from the first series of Power Rangers.  That's actually way more cooler to me because I only watched the first series.  Oh the guy on the floor is my friend Chris, if you recognize him, um I"ll leave it at that.

Later on in the Con I was sitting in my Rozen Maiden Box (see below) and Robert Axelrod walked past me, Pat me on the Head, said "Your cute" and walked off.  LOL

Here is me with my friend Charlotte.  It's Kero from CardCaptorSarkua sharing space with Hinaichigo from RozenMaiden.

Hina likes to draw pictures.

So she got to draw pictures for some SailorScouts, L and Light from DeathNote, and for some Hogwart students.

For those who want to see the rest of my pictures from the con you can check them out here. http://picasaweb.google.com/smallrinilady.sakuracon2/2010AkiCon#

Rini's Logo

I want to start making my cosplay photos pop more, like adding a boarder, adding an artistic stamp (Logo), and or doing so photo shopping to change lightening effects of the photo.

So this is what I came up with for the Logo.  It's transparent so I will only have the lines stamped onto a photo.  The line colors will change according to the look and feel of the picture it will be stamped on.

I have two versions, I like vesion one better because I think it's cooler and easier to maintain and add to pictures, but version two is more clear when it gets shrunk
